Texas, My Texas

Texas, My Texas

Extending over 260,000 miles, the state of Texas is the second largest state in America. From its economy to state pride, Texas has proved to one of the best states in the nation. These are just six of the many reasons Texans love to call the Lone Star State their home.

1. Education. Texas is the home to four tier one universities -- University of Texas, Texas A & M, Texas Tech University and University of Houston. Each one of these universities has accomplishments and nationally acclaimed programs. The promotion of education and higher achievement gives its citizens not only a wealth of knowledge, but also great potential for success.

2. Economy. The focus on education is a contributing factor to why Texas is one of the most prosperous economies in the nation. For about 93 months, the state's unemployment rate has been at, or below, the national unemployment rate. The energy industry has become a leading force in Texas' economy. If it were a country, Texas would be the sixth largest oil producer in the world. Along with the oil and gas industry, Texas also leads in renewable energy. After driving past miles and miles of West Texas windmills, it is no shock that Texas is the largest producer in wind energy. The state continues to grow and prosper.

3. Diversity. Most people believe Texas is only hillbillies and hoedowns. Well, it is not. With a pop population of more than 26 million people, Texas is home to six out the 20 largest cities in the United States. Texas has large, busy cities and small quiet towns, desert and mountains, heat and snow, and everything in between. No matter what type of climate, geography, culture, or economy, it has it all.

4. Texas country. Texas country music is traditional country music with a little bit of sass on the side. What makes this music different is that, instead of money and fame, Texas country focuses on the average hard-working person and their struggles, achievements, and celebrations. It glorifies the small things in life like sunsets, dance halls and love. The unique characteristics of Texas country have made this sub-genre become a popular and well-known type of music.

5. Road trips. Road trips in Texas are different from road trips in other states. First of all, in Texas, you can drive 13 hours and still be in Texas. As you drive throughout Texas, you can go from urban to rural to desert to mountains, which makes for a very interesting drive. Secondly, we have the king of all gas stations, Buckees. With homemade beef jerky, various slushes, beaver nuggets, and other snacks, Buckees is the one stop shop for anything your heart desires on a road trip. Once you've stopped at Buckees and hit the road, nothing is better than cruising down the highway (legally) going 85 mph. The majority of our interstate highway speed limits are 75 mph and in some are even 85 mph.

6. State pride. Texans are known for their state pride and loyalty. From bumper stickers to tattoos, Texans have various ways of showing their love and appreciation for this great state. We are the only state in America that require (unless exempted by a guardian) students in public schools to pledge allegiance not only to the American flag, but also to the Texas flag. As citizens of Texas, we have so much honor, love and pride for our great state.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
