Greek of the Week: Sarah Pruitt

BY MADDIE NELSON
This week, our Greek of the Week is Sarah Pruitt, a junior in Delta Zeta sorority. Sarah is a psychology major from Destin, Fla., and her recent t-shirt design was chosen to as the official t-shirt for UTK’s Greek Week. Sarah figured she would design a t-shirt that appeals to both guys and girls, and she chose a “Southern coastal feel,” considering the theme for 2014 Greek Week is “Just Another Week in Paradise.”

Sarah’s experience as Delta Zeta’s purchasing chair, along with natural talent and a good eye for fashion, equipped her with the necessary skills to design the winning t-shirt.

In addition, Sarah is involved on campus in intramurals, For the Kids Dance Marathon, and Education 100. Regarding Education 100, Sarah explained that she is, “completing a Service Learning Practicum at Hardin Valley Elementary School. I was placed in a third grade classroom where I mentor once a week. It has been such a fun learning experience; all of the students are adorable!”

For the Kids is a nationwide organization that raises money to research and treat childhood cancer. At UTK, the funds support East Tennessee Children's Hospital's Hematology and Oncology Clinic. Sarah expressed that her involvement in FTK has taught her, “the importance of giving back to the community. The children from East Tennessee Children’s Hospital are so sweet and appreciative of the time we spent at the event with them.”

Sarah’s favorite college memories are rooted in her involvement in organizations but also include some of her favorite traditions and other experiences here at UT. Sarah loves tailgating with her friends and family before football games, as football season is her favorite time of the year.

Some spontaneous methods of stress relief have also characterized Sarah’s UT experience, as she described a story about finals week, last semester. Sarah walked us through this memory by explaining, “I was really stressed during finals last semester and needed a study break, so during the middle of the night, I left Hodges and snuck into Neyland Stadium with two of my sorority sisters. We left covered in orange and white spray paint from the checkerboard end zone, something I’ll never forget!”

We wish the best to Sarah as she continues her educational career here at UT in pursuit of a major in Psychology and a minor in Elementary Education, with the hopes of eventually becoming a kindergarten teacher.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
