From Neyland to Lindsey Nelson

18

By Cassie McCrackenHow do you spend your free time during the spring semester? The fall seems more appealing on paper, right? Then, tailgates are taking precedence over all other weekend activities.  Waves of orange from all over the state of Tennessee are flooding Neyland Stadium. Burgers and hot dogs are handed out to anyone who supports the Volunteers, and crazed fans partake in all of our rich traditions from the Vol Walk to the Pride of the Southland Band.
While it is easier to give recognition to the more prominent athletic programs on campus, why should students have to miss out on the fun and excitement of supporting your university’s team and traditions just because the football season has ended? Well, here’s the secret. You don’t.
Despite the fact that I have been a Volunteer football fan from the time I was old enough for my grandmother to teach me how to sing “Rocky Top,” I have found that we have rich traditions and history in many of our other athletic programs as well. During the spring semester instead of procrastinating homework on Buzzfeed or binge watching a new series on Netflix, why not head to Lindsey Nelson Stadium to watch the Diamond Vols take on their next opponent?
This season, the team has already displayed promising performances, earning a 19-4  record and carrying on a legacy that few realize exists.
Prior to the 1990’s, the Volunteers had never won more than 40 games or even made it the post season in 38 years. Their lack of success in their conference and nationally would have been disheartening to say the least. In an effort to improve, Rod Delmonico was hired and arrived in Knoxville in 1990. By his second season, Delmonico managed to improve the team’s record, and success only sky-rocketed from there. Delmonico was named SEC Coach of the Year in 1994 and 1995 and continued to add National Coach of the Year to his list of accolades after leading the Vols to their first College World Series appearance since 1951.
Not to mention, he is the most winningest coach in UT’s history. The players he coached include Olympians like R.A. Dickey and Augie Ojeda. Most notably, he coached Todd Helton who was a National Player of the Year and 3-time All-American. Helton went on to play for the Colorado Rockies for the next 17 years. While this brief excerpt of the history behind Tennessee’s baseball program might not be as extensive as some of the greats that have passed through Neyland, the history behind our baseball program provides excellent insight into the future of the Diamond Vols.
With a young team, new traditions are already being made with players such as A.J. Simcox who was a bat boy for the Volunteers while his father was an assistant coach to Delmonico. Traditions and dedication like what Volunteer players and fans have should not go unnoticed. So, what are you doing next weekend? The Diamond Vols begin their series against Vanderbilt on April 4th at 6 PM. While Vandy’s baseball team has certainly proved themselves within the SEC, the Volunteers have the opportunity to truly show their talent, but they aren’t going to be able to do it without your support. Hope to see you all there!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
