There has been extremely strange weather happening lately and we all are wondering, Is it here to stay? Some of us are loving the warmer weather while others hope for some fun in the snow. Although the weather may be unusually warm in some places, it is destructive in others. Places that have never had snow are being slammed with it and places that are usually packed with snow are seeing the sun, along with their grassy yards. Around the world, there has been extreme flooding, record temperatures and storms. The North Pole was a whopping 40 degrees in late December.
Two contributing factors to this unconventional weather are El Niño, which is a global climate event caused by immense sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific, and a powerful Arctic Oscillation, which is a climate pattern distinguished by winds circulating in counterclockwise motion around the Arctic. There have been many storms along the West Coast of the United States, and California is desperately in need of rainfall. It is expected that California will experience flooding and landslides on its coast.
According to TIME, the event will have devastating effects in 2016, leaving tens of millions of people hungry, and is expected to cause water shortages and disease outbreaks. Global warming has caused this event to become massive and damaging. The damages from greenhouse gases will continue to be in the air, and there is no way to fix this. This means that the bizarre weather will, unfortunately, be staying for a while. Global warming is real and we need to do everything we can to prevent it because we cannot undo our damages.
