Why Your Little Rocks

Here are five reasons why your little is the best thing happening:

1. You are her mentor.

Believe it or not, one year of college can truly make a difference. Think about where you were this time last year -- you are probably far from the person you are today. The mistakes and misfortunes you have endured give you wisdom you did not have a year ago. Since you have lived and you have learned, it is time to give back. Your little is going through these vital college years one step behind you, so take on the responsibility to provide as much advice and counsel to her, as possible, to prepare her for the coming years.

2. She is an outside opinion.

Ever find yourself at odds with a significant other, a best friend or a professor? Calling mom is not always going to be your best bet, depending on the context of the situation and considering she has not met the people you are having a conflict with. Your little, most likely, runs in a different circle and has completely different friends, but she still knows your crowd pretty well. Confiding in her about these situations can ensure an informed and honest opinion.

3. She will pick you up in times of need.

After long nights on Campus Corner some of us just need a ride in the mornings. And your little can pick you up when you are feeling down. Catching up and talking about your crazy lives can take your mind off things and, generally, brighten your day.

4. You can live vicariously through her.

No one really wants college to end. Every year on campus brings a stronger and stronger sense of nostalgia. Sophomores, are you missing the Caf? Call your little and you will have a meal in no time. Juniors, are you missing living in the house? Call your little and have a sleepover. Seniors, are you missing the newness of the bar scene? You get my drift. Your little will be more than willing to show her big a great time no matter the circumstance.

5. She is your legacy.

Believe it or not, we will all (hopefully) graduate one day. Everyone wants to be able to say they changed a place when they leave it behind. If nothing else, you can leave your legacy to your little to carry on. A little bit of you can live on, not only in your little, but in your grand-little, and future generations to come.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
