The first game of the Bedlam soccer series is now in the books. The Women’s Soccer Team played OSU last Friday night and came out with a season opening win.
The Oklahoma soccer team denied the Cowgirls of a win with a 2-0 victory. A crowd of over 1,000 fans came out to support the Sooners at the John Crain Field in the OU Soccer Complex.
In the first eight minutes, OSU attempted to shoot twice, but our goalkeeper, Kaitlyn Fahrner, set the tone of the game early by making the two saves that helped us start off on the right foot. This was Fahrner’s first career start for the Sooners and she performed like a veteran. She warded off the Cowgirl’s scoring attempts by blocking 14 total shots and five corner kicks.
A corner kick by Laura Rayfield in the 12th minute gave the Sooners a quick look at the goal, but OSU’s keeper blocked the shot.
OSU got a lucky chance with a risky shot in the 26th minute of the game, but it was quickly rejected. The Sooners responded with a drive down the field by Rachel Ressler, that ended up in a goal, making the score 1-0.
OSU still continued to put up a fight and sent two shots at the Sooners, which were both saved by Fahrner.
The Sooners, still hungry for another goal in the first half, struck again in the 40th minute. Devin Junior Barrett fired a long shot from 45 yards out and the shot was fumbled off of OSU’s keepers’ hands. OU then had two goals on the Cowgirls going into half time.
The second half of the game was a fight between both teams. Each executed expert plays and attempted goals throughout the last 45 minutes of the half. OSU took three corners and six shots, but they were all blocked, and with that, the Sooners tried to score more with every opportunity that was presented to them.
OU’s defense battled hard in the second half to make sure that the ball was cleared out every time the Cowgirls made a drive towards them. A total of 17 players got to see time on the field for the Sooner Soccer Team during this match.
Overall, this was a huge victory for the Sooners, as they now start their season with a 1-0-0 record and take an early advantage in the Bedlam series.
