If you think about it, we spend a pretty good amount of our time walking to and from our classes. And if you really, really think about it, there is some extremely random stuff that we do on the way to class to pass the time. I pop in my headphones and jam to whatever song I have on repeat for the seven-minute walk from the house to Gaylord. Music always helps me block out everyone else and makes the walk seem shorter.
Another random thing we do, and I am guilty of this, is mess
with my phone to act like I am doing something productive or to avoid any
awkward conversations on my way to class. I constantly checking my messages and
emails, even though I probably don’t have that many.
Avoid the bike lane at all costs. I have spent a solid
amount of time simply avoiding getting run over by bikers if I am a mere two inches into the bike lane. So whilst I’m listening to music and
messing with my phone, I am dodging the bikers and trying to stay as far away
from that dreaded bike lane, as possible.
The preachers and random people who hand out flyers, or
as I call them, the “flyer hander-outer people,” are another side bar. I am going to sound awful when
I say this, but I avoid both of them like the plague. I am pretty sure most of
the students here can agree that the preacher is just a headache waiting to
happen. As for the flyer people, I am just trying to get from point A to point
B and normally, my schedule is so hectic that I don’t have time for whatever
they are trying to tell me. So, I politely smile, say, “no thanks, but have a
good day,” and go about my merry way, continuing to avoid the bike lane and
jamming to music.
Lastly, we have all been victims to our phones because
of either hitting snooze one too many times or completely forgetting to set our
alarms, so we frantically jump out of bed and scurry to class. The
worst is when you forgot to do an assignment or have some last-minute cramming
to do for a test, so while you are running to class, you try to finish whatever
it is that wasn’t done. I have done this one too many
times. So, basically, I end up in an awkward fast walk,
jamming to music, avoiding the bike lane and the preachers, studying, and
eating breakfast on the go, all at once. Who knew so much went on during that
short seven-minute walk?
