How To Prepare For The Real World

The thought of graduatingĀ college is incredibly scary. We are kind of adults, but once we walk across that graduation stage, we will be expected to be full-time adults. The idea of preparing for the big girl world, and a big girl job, makes me want to cringe. However, as a junior, I know that it is becoming much more important that I do so very soon. Whether you are a newbie to college, or a senior getting ready to take the plunge into a career, you can never be too prepared on how to make yourself stand out to employers. Here are three ways to help prepare you for the real world, and get your resume to the top of the pile.Ā

Internships, internships, internships Ā

Experience in your field will help you get a job in your field. Crazy, huh? Apply to as many internships as you can. This is also a great way to network and open doors for future opportunities. One internship could lead to a job, which is a great,Ā since the whole point of getting our degree is to land a job.Ā

Involvement

Employers love seeing a well rounded candidate. If you make great grades, on top of being involved on campus, you have a better chance of being hired. It is great to be involved in something related to your major, but donā€™t be afraid to branch out and try new clubs. Join a club that relates to something you are passionate about, or something thatĀ interests you.Ā

GradesĀ Ā

This is kind of obvious, but it needs to be said. It is great to be involved, or have an internship, but if you cannot make the grades, you will not stand out. Work hard and put extra effort into your classes. We are here to learn, and the grades you make definitely stick with you for aĀ while, and reflect your work ethic. Make the effort to get to know your professors. Not only will they be willing to help you out if you are struggling, they are also a great way to build connections. A lot of them worked in your field before becoming professors, and they might be able to connect you with other people in your major of choice. Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā

Good luck, and happy preparing!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
