Happy Homecoming Sooners!

Homecoming brings together all of OU’s students to show off their school spirit. From Oct. 13 to Oct. 18, a series of fun events are held around OU’s campus. On-campus clubs, sororities and fraternities all compete to see who has the most school pride by choosing a theme and incorporating it throughout the different contests.

The week began with a banner competition where all of the groups submit a hand painted banner to be judged alongside the others. On Tuesday, wooden boards painted to match each group’s theme were displayed on the South Oval for all to see. These are judged, as well, and the winner was announced later in the week for both the banners and boards.

Homecoming Holdup was also held early in the week to raise money for Children’s Miracle Hospitals and Oklahoma Children’s Hospital Foundation. One person from each group wore a costume and was “held hostage” in the South Oval. They tried to get passing students to donate money while wearing a costume pertaining to their group’s theme.

On Wednesday evening, organizations had a chance to win a spirit award at the Night At The Huff event where participants played volleyball, basketball or dodge ball. The award was determined by enthusiasm, signs and the number of participants for each group. There was a sidewalk chalk competition on Thursday afternoon, where each group drew a design on the South Oval sidewalk. Friday night was one of the most entertaining competitions with the Homecoming Pep Rally. Sororities paired up with fraternities to choreograph a dance to get the crowd pumped up for the football game the next day. The pairs were judged and scored to determine the top three dances.

Saturday morning got an early start for school spirit with a parade around campus. The organizations competing in the homecoming events had been constructing floats weeks in advance, which were then driven down crowd-lined streets and judges determined a winner for the most creative float. Homecoming royalty court was also driven around in convertibles during the parade wearing tiaras and sashes to show their nominations. After the parade, the football game against Kansas State was full of enthusiastic fans cheering on their favorite school. Homecoming competition winners, along with the homecoming royalty king and queen were announced at halftime during the game.

The University of Oklahoma values the tradition of Homecoming, and it is a week that all students and faculty look forward to. The week always seems to go by fast, so it is important to take in every moment.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
