1. Utilize your Netflix account.
This may be one of the most obvious options for all the sorority girls out there. We have pretty much mastered the art of knocking out whole seasons of a TV show within a week’s time. This is the perfect opportunity for you to catch up on those shows you haven’t gotten around to yet, or even catch some repeat viewings.
2. Have some roomie hangout time.
Let’s be honest, this is one of the very first ideas that pops into every college student’s mind when they hear the words “snow day” or “school is cancelled”. Take this snow day as a chance to reconnect, gossip and even have a little day party, or “darty.”
3. Make something from Pinterest.
Pinterest is addicting enough, so why not attempt to make one of those millions of unique crafts? This could be anything from a new wreath for your front door, to one of those mason jar wall lighting projects. No matter how complicated or crafty you want to get, this option is a great afternoon activity to do with your roommates. However, make sure you Instagram your craft when you are done or it will be like it never happened.
4. Catch up on some sleep.
This may not seem like the best recommendation, but if you are running behind on your sleep schedule, then you might want to consider sleeping during the snowstorm to take full advantage of the time off from school.
5. Call your parents.
Your parents are always worried about you and you know very well that they have The Weather Channel app set up with severe weather alerts from your zip code. It only takes five to 10 minutes, tops, so do your parents a favor and let them know you are still alive.
6. Have a snowball fight.
It’s a snow day so, naturally, playing in the snow always seems like a good idea. Channel your inner child and get a group of friends together to go sledding, organize a snowball fight or run around in the snow. Sure, you will most likely get sick of being outside in the freezing cold after 15 minutes, but it’s the thought that counts. Throw on four layers of clothing and you will be able to spare your body from the shockingly cold weather conditions.
7. Organize your upcoming week.
Everyone has those times where they feel so overwhelmed by the day-to-day responsibilities of college life that they just need to sit down and make a “to-do” list for the upcoming weeks. If you have been too busy to make plans, then being stuck inside during a blizzard will give you plenty of time to think about activities you want to participate in and tasks you haven’t accomplished yet.
8. Bake cookies.
This is a classic snow day tradition everyone did with their moms as a kid. So, why not bring the tradition back while in college? No one can say no to a delicious batch of homemade, chocolate chip cookies.
9. Make snow ice cream.
Assuming the snow outside is fresh enough, making snow ice cream is one of my family’s longtime traditions. Pair it with a steaming mug of hot cocoa and you will have a cozy setup while utilizing your Netflix account, as mentioned earlier.
Here’s how to make delicious snow ice cream:
8 cups snow
1 14 oz. can sweetened condensed milk
1 tsp. vanilla extract
Mix to combine and serve immediately in bowls.
10. Do some online shopping.
This would be my personal choice. Unless the boutiques on Campus Corner are open, or you are willing to brave the storm to do a bit of shopping, browsing online clothing sites is a good option if you are looking to waste an hour or two. There will always be a date party or other Greek function that calls for a brand new outfit. Does anyone really need a legitimate excuse to shop?
