I post almost daily on Instagram. When I take photos on my unfortunately cracked iPhone 6, I purposely take them with the idea that they will most likely be posted onto Instagram. Because of this, I account for Instagram's dimensions and inability to post landscape or portrait photos to their fullest. I have been conditioned to take my photos differently and move on with that fact. Even when I take photos on my camera, I do the same.
Scrolling through my Facebook feed, I came across a BuzzFeed article identifying Instagram's new update, which now gives options to post portrait or landscape photos. NO MORE WHITE BACKGROUNDS. Jumping up from my bed, only to lie down minutes later, I hurriedly opened my still cracked iPhone 6 and installed the newest update for Instagram.
Like a giddy kid on Christmas who scored a new American Girl doll or maybe even a Barbie set with at least 15 different outfit options, I open the new and improved app. With a smile on my face, I open the posting feature and see the new addition. I was excited...for about 10 minutes.
As an Instagram addict, this change is so late. Where was this when I had several apps solely installed just to crop photos or add white backgrounds specifically because of the lack of this feature? After 700 posts of getting around the dimensions of portrait and landscape photos, I feel like I can't change my photography habits. When I take an aerial shot of the Georgetown Cupcakes I can't eat, should I still cut off some of the cupcakes or post the entire photo?
Granted, this is a feature that should have been there from the beginning, I just don't really get why it is only being added now. I feel like the battle against having your photos cut off is totally an argument of yesterday. I know, as a social media addict and as a photographer, I have definitely altered not only the content I chose to post, but how I even obtain the content organically.
I feel as if this addition is a little too late. Not to sound like JoJo, but she did say it best.
