Hiker Survives Being Stranded In Californian Forest

62-year-old Miyuki Harwood has been found after being missing in the Sierra Nevada mountains for nine days. Teams and helicopters had been searching to no avail. On Saturday, Aug. 29, rescuers located Harwood near the Courtright Reservoir in Fresno County, after she blew a whistle to alert them.

Harwood was found injured and was airlifted to a hospital after being rescued. CNN reports Harwood, an analyst at Intel in Folsom, California, was camping with the Sierra Club when she left the camp the morning of August 21 for a solo hike. After not returning, fellow campers reported her disappearance. Her rescue spot in Fresno was approximately 100 miles from the site near Horsehead Lake.

CNN also reported that a Blackhawk helicopter, a Chinook helicopter and a drone were used in the search. Smoke from a wildfire burned 96 square miles nearby in the Kings Canyon National Park, temporarily stalling the rescue search and preventing visibility.

Harwood had also reportedly suffered several broken bones at some point during her hike but is currently listed in stable condition. She survived with only enough supplies for a day, by filtering and drinking creek water.

The Independent reports that Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims met Harwood in the hospital. On Harwood’s condition, Mims said, “Her voice was strong. She was extremely thankful that people were looking for her.”

Harwood’s remarkable survivor story follows just two months after several hikers lived through a lightning strike while hiking Mount Bierstadt in Colorado.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
