Oftentimes we fall prey to misconceptions, one of them being that if you go through the recruitment process you have to be as 100% committed to the decision as everyone else. But what does reality tell us?
Undeniably, many students are dead set on sororities and fraternities. Maybe they're legacies, or have other Greek friends who encourage them to follow the same path. They have developed a good idea about what a sorority or fraternity can do, and have been exposed to what that lifestyle entails. Crazily enough, many have even scoped out a particular chapter and made it their "do or die" mission to become a member.
But what about all of you out there who know next to nothing about sisterhood or brotherhood? You're interested, but overwhelmed by a sense of doubt, hesitation, and maybe even insecurity as to whether you can find a place, your place, within the Greek community. Well, here's the secret that they don't tell you going in: the vast majority are in the same boat!
There are just as many unsure about Greek Life as there are stubbornly set on joining it. And that's beyond acceptable! Greek Life isn't ideal for everyone, although it fashions an unforgettable journey for most. Either way, it's vitally important to give it a try so you can guarantee your freedom from future regrets.Â
A lot goes in with the sole intention of recruitment. You can always decide whether or not to pledge later! The main objective should be to push yourself outside your comfort zone. You won't believe how much your confidence and personal-ease will increase the more you talk your way through those exhausting rounds with each chapter. You'll soon learn what you like and don't like, all the while become more outgoing and comfortable in your own skin.
And let's be honest, there are many ways you can benefit from joining a chapter! Besides the given perk of having a packed social calendar each week, you forge long-lasting connections. You're constantly meeting unexpected people, building relationships, and networking in ways you couldn't have imagined before. You have an unbreakable support system, a family that cares about your wellbeing and unquestioning defends you, flaws and all.
It's within this support system that you find out how to reach your highest potential. Afraid of failing? Nope, not even an option with so many looking out for you. The sisters or brothers you adopt help you thrive in every way possible, the most important of which is simply being happy.Â
And let's face it, that task is much harder than it looks when you're transitioning. It's true that individually, you have the potential to become something remarkable. But collectively, that "something remarkable" has the potential to make a very tangible difference by being unforgettable. Go Greek.Â
