Started originally by Pike juniors, Alex Belman and Kenny Ness, November will kick off the third annual “Beards for Boobs” campaign. Designed around “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” and the widely popular “No Shave November,” the two came up with a creative way to fundraise for Susan G. Komen.
The event works by having people, friends, family, or others in the community sponsor the different guys to grow out long, luscious beards during the month of November. Most of the proceeds will go to Susan G. Komen in an effort to promote the fraternity’s mission of raising awareness for Breast Cancer and Breast Cancer Research. In just its first year, the boys raised $2,500 and last year they raised a grand total of $12,000.
“This year we want to raise $30,000 and we think we can accomplish this with help from the Greek community,” said founder Alex Belman.
While the event is not strictly limited to Greek life, many fraternities and sororities are now involved by either growing beards (the guys that is!) or by sponsoring a guy growing a beard, buying a t-shirt, or by simply donating to Susan G. Komen. Homegrown and created solely by Miami Students, the event has grown significantly and will continue the next few months.
What can you say, ladies? We’re all gearing up to see what these beards will bring in November!
