Why Your Long-Distance Best Friend Gets You More Than Anyone

It can be hard sometimes, when your person from back home lives hundreds or thousands of miles away from you, in some other college/university. You've been inseparable for years now and really, who were you kidding when you thought you would lose touch with them? You would DIE without them. What makes it worse is that your friends at school just don't understand, and here are a couple of reasons why.

You first bonded during an awkward stage.

Admit it, we all had the braces and the frizzy hair. Even those of us who were blessed enough to skip this phase, still went through this awkward time of life. There was no way to be as confident then as we are now. Closer friendships are formed in more sober middle school basements than they are in drunken encounters at frat houses — FACT.

They know all of your inside jokes, so you actually have someone else to laugh with when you say them.

Why did I just laugh when I said cheese balls? You don't know, but my home best friend would.

You don't know your college friends families too well, but you practically live at your LDBFFL's house, whenever you're home.

And yes, you know all of their family drama. You've memorized all of their stories and quirks, because you've been hearing them for years now -- you still love your LDBFFL more than anything, though.

They hear about your life in excruciating detail via text, phone calls, and FaceTime, so much so that it's almost like they're living vicariously through you.

You already know that my best friend knows what I ate for breakfast this morning, and how the hot guy at Starbucks told me I had pretty eyes. Also, my best friend knows exactly how I reacted to him. Oh, and my best friend also knows my schedule for the next 27,498 weeks.

The people at your school just don't understand how good you and your LDBFFL's favorite restaurants from home are.

Yes, your friend has your regular order memorized. It never changes, so they can order for you if you're in the bathroom.

You and your LDBFFL both know exactly who from your high school to compare others to, as an immediate judge of character.

Ex: "I was going to talk to him but he reminds me of so and so," "ABORT MISSION IMMEDIATELY."

Or...

"She literally laughs exactly like..." "BYEEEEE."

They know how you really feel about the people around you.

Because really, who are they going to tell?

They were the first ones you tried "bad things" with.

You'll never forget the time you were in the ninth grade and the two of you split a beer from the fridge at a sleepover, or the time you totally stayed out a whole 20 minutes past curfew and felt the adrenaline rush. Nobody here at college went through that stuff with you, we all came here cool (clearly).

You and your LDBFFL were each other's actual date to prom, and therefore will be backup dates to every event where a date is required...forever.

Any old date at college wouldn't know that you really just want to be at home in sweats, but your best friend sure as hell does.

Your LDBFF goes through the same friendship withdrawals as you do, and nobody you go to school with shows you the same kind of affection.

Saying I miss you and counting down the days until you reunite will always be a daily necessity.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
