The World Last Week

Stuff you should know but probably don't.

18

There's a lot of stuff that happened last week. You might have been paying too much attention to the celebrity cell-phone scandal and were gearing up for the NFL and college football seasons to start.

But last week was pretty busy in terms of world news.

Israel and Hamas are still at each others throats but are maintaining an uneasy ceasefire. The Iraqi Prime Minister launched an offensive to regain land taken by ISIS. ISIS beheaded another American reporter. We cured a doctor of Ebola with a new drug that's being tested. Ukraine and Russia still kinda hate each other but neither is willing to throw the first official punch. Reddit shut down the subreddit's that were linking and spreading leaked cell phone pictures of celebrities to avoid a lawsuit. And we finally caught Jack the Ripper!

Of all these things, you probably heard about a couple of them. Or maybe you heard about none of them - in which case you should probably start reading the paper or just Googling "world news" at least once a week.

If you don't want to do that, I'll summarize the bulk of your reading right here!

So Israel and Hamas (the leading political faction in Palestine) are still holding an uneasy truce, which is good since it means that less people are being bombed. However, the truce is shaky at best, and it's safe to say it probably won't last that much longer.

The unfortunate fact in this story is that Israel hates Palestine, and Palestine hates Israel at a political level. I'm not saying the people of these countries hate each other; there's a large faction of people that do want peace, but at a fundamental level the leading factions refuse to allow the other to exist.

The Iraqi Prime Minister has sent an offensive force to Tikrit to regain control of the city that has been held by ISIS for almost two months. While this was happening ISIS sent a message to the US to stop air strikes directed towards them, after which they beheaded two American journalists in retaliation. They continue to be a radical and unstable terrorist organization in Iraq and the Middle East.

American aid workers flown back to the US after becoming infected with Ebola were cured of the disease and are able to become much more resistant to the strain of Ebola they contracted.

Ukraine is still fighting off "militant rebels" in the eastern towns near the Russian border. It's generally accepted that these rebels are Russian backed soldiers but no one seems to want to punish Russia for aiding and attacking Ukraine. The world seems content to let Ukraine deal with this problem alone; after all, inaction in the best solution when a country commits acts of war on another.

In more social and less heavy news, Reddit has banned all subreddits dedicated to the release of stolen celebrity photos, but is content allowing such subreddits as r/cutefemalecorpses - seriously, I thought it was a joke (it's not) - exist, because no one's trying to sue anyone for ownership of those pictures. Censoring one group of people while allowing a much sicker group to exist will always confuse me.

Finally, we finally figured out who Jack the Ripper was, after a shawl belonging to one of the victims was discovered and DNA was tested against previously-accused men thought to be the notorious serial killer. The DNA evidence finally concluded that a Polish immigrant named Aaron Kosminski committed these crimes over 100 years ago. Kosminski was a very big suspect in the early investigations but no evidence could be linked to him at the time; he died in an insane asylum 11 years after the murders.

Well, you got a quick and easy look at the world last week. All of these stories can be found on the Internet at much deeper depth and each one is a pretty good read, regardless of where you read it.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
