Emma Watson is a movie star, fashion icon, and most importantly a strong advocate for gender equality. She has taken the fight for gender equality to a new position, one that invites everyone, not just females, to partake. Not everyone has agreed with her methods, but I strongly believe that she is making a huge positive impact.
It has been over a year since Emma Watson, the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, stood in the United Nations Headquarters and launched the HeForShe campaign. Since then, over 470,000 men have joined this movement. Her speech was one of the most powerful I have ever heard as she called men to take part in the fight for gender equality by saying, “If we stop defining each other by what we are not and start defining ourselves by what we are—we can all be freer and this is what HeForShe is about. It’s about freedom.”
How can we be united and fight for gender equality when we don’t invite males to help us? We are all imprisoned into these stereotypes that we have for each other, and like Emma said, we won’t be free until we define each other by what we truly are instead of what we are not.
However, Emma’s speech was only the beginning of this freedom movement. Last week, the HeForShe campaign launched the #GetFree University Tour in the United Kingdom. The tour is expected to expand to other parts of the globe in 2016. Elizabeth Nyamayaro, who is heading up the initiative, told the press, “We see the youth as a big catalyst for change.” The #GetFree tour gives HeForShe the opportunity to expand to new markets and get youth involved in the fight. We can't wait to see the response from the universities and the impact they make in the fight for gender equality.
