The Extra Large Problem

There is something really riveting about being a tall woman. We can walk through a crowd and turn heads. Plus, our friends will never lose us in crowd. When you really need us, we can grab the cereal box off the top shelf. And what is more awesome than long, beautiful legs?

But with great power comes great responsibility. As a six- foot female, I have come to understand the struggle of being tall, especially in a college atmosphere. So here are eight reasons why being a tall woman is an extra large problem.

1. Sharing clothes

This is a problem we will face throughout life. But it is even worse when you cannot share your roommates cute clothes because she is way under 5'9". In fact, you even mentioned that it would be close to impossible when you first met. No matter their size, nothing that fits them will ever fit you. And even if it does, it will definitely not fit you the same way, thanks to your long legs and large torso. Don't even think about trying on her shoes! It just is not going to work out.

2. High heels

Every tall girl loves wearing high heels. It is a fact. There is something that makes us more confident with an extra four inches. Yet, every time we step out in those killer shoes, we get asked the question "Why are you wearing heels? You are already tall enough!" Well, my question for you is why are you wearing flats? You are definitely short enough.

3. Horrible desks

Even short people hate them! So how are we supposed to deal with it? And forget crossing your legs! Face the facts, your lecture desks will never sit flat.

4. Extra long twin beds

This is a satanic word to all tall people. We have all had to live in the dorm and endure the lie that is an extra long bed. My roommates feet fit perfectly into her warm, little bed, while my feet hang off by a whole foot and must suffer through the cold draft.

5. The irony of being a little

For the first time in your life you are "little." Don't get me wrong. It is amazing. But I will never truly be the little. I stand eight inches above my g-big, and six inches above my big. I guess we could be called the "un-little" or the "imposter little." Just embrace it.

6. Sorority squatting

It is a nightmare. Asking the tallest person to squat below the level of all the short people is just wrong. Period.

7. Finding the perfect date

All of your sisters and friends are finding their perfect dates to date functions and formals while you worry about whether or not you will find a date who will be suitable for pictures when you wear your high heels. We might as well invite the basketball team. Not a bad idea!

8. Having to tilt your head as you dance on the bar      Yes, I said it. We all love it and it is a thrill. But we all dread the embarrassing fact that the distance from the bar to the ceiling is very limited and sometimes we just may not fit. So either tilt your head or bend your knees. You got this!

Although being tall can be a problem for some things in our lives, it is also a blessing. We may be called Shaq, or constantly be asked if we play volleyball -- which we probably did -- but when it comes down to it, nothing could be better! So keep rocking the heels and turning heads. And keep your head held high -- as if you had a choice.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
