Andrew Lehr, the University of Michigan student who was forced to take the SAT as a result of coming in last in his fantasy football league, was able to succeed in his requirement of getting a 500 on each section. Lehr scored an impressive 720 on the math section, a 610 on the writing section, and a 590 on the reading section.
His total of 1920 was just 80 points shy of his best score when taking the SAT as a high school junior although, this time, he went in without months of preparation. The easy going sophomore was able to bring some humor to the situation, wearing the crazy outfit pictured above. Upon completing the rigorous test he sent a text saying, “The test wasn’t bad… neither were the girls ;).”
One thing Lehr wasn’t so calm about was the scoring of his essay portion of the standardized test. Following the test, he raved about the story he had written perfectly written about two of his favorite individuals -- Steve Jobs and LeBron James. Having received an 11 out of 12 possible points on his first attempt at the SAT three years back, Lehr was positive his masterpiece would receive the prestigious 12/12.
When he got his scores back three weeks later, he was pleased to see that he had gotten a 590 in critical reading without preparing, but was furious to see that he had received just a 10 out of 12 on the essay. “This is blasphemy,” he shouted after checking his scores. “In the past few years my writing has improved dramatically and this essay was, undoubtedly, better than the one I wrote three years ago.” Lehr went on to add that there might have been some foul play involved in the scoring of his essay. As he put it, “I’m willing to bet that the jerk who graded this is a huge San Antonio Spurs fan, who has all of his stock in Microsoft and has a Zune in his pocket,” he ranted. “Either that, or they just don’t read the essays at all.”
The SAT announced recently that it is completely doing away with the essay portion and the writing section. Maybe this is due more to the ineptitude of essay graders than anything else.
Lehr had one final thing to say about his experience. “Suck it, Turkey!" This was a jab at Billy Greenfield, who was quoted as saying Lehr would fail to reach 500 in each section.
