For 11 glorious days in September, the delicious restaurants of Charleston will make themselves affordable to the low income college student. With amazing deals you may be lured into many restaurants you have never tried before. Few are bad, some are good, and many are great and I'm here to give a definitive ranking.Â
Being in Charleston for two years has allowed me to try many of the downtown restaurants but not as many off the peninsula. i will be ranking the ones i have been to. There is a complete list here on their website as well as all the deals each restaurant will be running so you can plan accordingly. Happy eating!
First let me say that there are many honorable mentions to this list of ten that I have tried. There are also many other restaurants around Charleston that are to die for, but will not be participating in restaurant week. These 10 rose above the rest for me and from my experiences at each.Â
10. Caviar & Bananas Gourmet Market & Cafe: Many of us love B&C but it's a little on the expensive side. With restaurant week you can try that new sandwich you've been eyeing, or the pastry goods that always look so tempting. Side note: they also have amazing sushi.Â
9. Five Loaves Cafe: With homemade pasta, and such cool inventive dishes, who wouldn't love 5 Loaves? They also have amazing deserts so save room.Â
8. Fleet Landing Restaurant and Bar: Fleet Landing has an amazing array of very Charleston dishes. Their seafood is to die for much like the rest of the seafood in Charleston. They also mix a pretty good beverage.Â
7. Hank's Seafood Restaurant and Bar: Hank's is definitely a place to take a parent or family member. They have really good oyster appetizers and even better desserts. The ambiance is mildly romantic and fancy and is not a norts type venue.Â
6. Mellow Mushroom: This is honestly one of my favorite places in Charleston. I try to try a new pizza in there every time I go just because each one is so different. This is a full year round place, not just a restaurant week place, but restaurant week can help ease the burden of paying so much for pizza. Â
5. Toast: Toast is one of the most crowded places in Charleston. As I told a friend I took there there "you will wait in line, and you will like it". Their brunch is legendary and should be sampled when visiting the most friendly city in America. Some may argue that Poogan's Porch is better, but they have never tried Toast's Eggs Meeting Street. Â
4. Hyman's Seafood: A Charleston staple and probably one of the most visited restaurants, by tourists, in downtown. The seafood is good, but the hushpuppies are out of this world. If you would like to sample some of the best hushpuppies around they hand them out right near the market and by the restaurant to entice people through their doors.Â
3. Coast Bar and Grill: Hands down my favorite seafood place in downtown. The food is more contemporary and less southern, although they do still carry a few southern style dishes. Also for all those Channing Tatum fans out there, this is the restaurant where they walked out looking so happy in Dear John.Â
2. Basil Thai Restaurant: One of the best Thai places. This is always a restaurant that my friends and I can agree to go to. Their food is just so good and they have fried ice cream, which I had never heard of until walking through their doors. Really worth a go if you haven't been there.Â
1. Circa 1886: Very fancy, very intimate, very good. I have never had better food. EVER. I went with a friends family and have yet to take a parent or date. The menu is a little pricey but worth it. With their participation in restaurant week this would be a great place to go. They have super secluded booths that are walled off from the ones they are next to. It is a magical place where food dreams come true.Â
