Going home for the first time can cause you to feel so many different emotions. Anxiety, excitement, and depression from leaving your new school and friends are just a few of the possibilities.
You'll have to make a trip home at one time or another, so here are a few things that you should take into account before you do so.
1. It will never be the same as when you permanently lived there. Ever.
2. People you thought you’d stay in touch with after high school will have changed and probably won’t talk to you.
3. But you have changed and grown as well, so it’s okay.
4. You will realize how fantastic it is to have your own bathroom.
5. Food will be in a room called the kitchen. You will get up from the couch in a room called the family room and easily grab that food at your convenience. It’ll be really nice.
6. In case you didn’t understand the emphasis in number five, you will have multiple rooms to walk around in, as you won’t be stuck in a little cubicle of a dorm.
7. YOUR OWN BATHROOM.
8. You will have forgotten what “puppy love” is. You will never take this for granted again.
9. You will notice that your parents have aged a bit because some time has passed since you last saw them. Give them a hug.
10. If you went out of state for college, going back home will make you appreciate all of the things you used to despise about your home state.
11. Beware of the display in your room with photos from prom and various dates with your high school sweetheart. You will have most likely forgotten about this shrine, but once you come face-to-face with it, it will bring back many memories. It’s okay to stop and reflect for awhile.
12. Your mom might start talking about changing your bedroom into an office or a workout room. Postpone this change for as long as you can!
13. You’ll overestimate the amount of free time you’ll have to spend time with your high school friends. You will probably want to stay in your house more often than you think.
14. This means you won’t get around to seeing all of the people you promised to see.
15. You will learn that having food, family, and an actual house to stay in is something that should never be taken for granted.
16. It is never easy seeing your mom cry when you leave, but seeing the look in your dog’s eyes when he/she sees you packing your bags again is so much harder.
17. Although having a home to go to is special, you will gain a much greater appreciation for the unique experience your college gives to you.
