I can't decide if I love or despise this trend. I feel like in the past month, my facebook feed has been flooded with links to sorority tumblrs, videos and instagrams.
It's natural that I (and many others) are curious about sorority tumblrs on my campus that aren't their own. I often find myself clicking the links and mindlessly scrolling through photos.
Part of me thinks this a genius recruiting idea. I remember, not that long ago, having freshly graduated high school and awaiting recruitment with excitement and anxiety. I wanted to learn and see everything about every sorority. I read reviews on greek rank (what I now know is a bogus website), I looked at instagrams of girls who weren't private, facebooks and even some vine accounts. You could either call this creeping/stalking or doing my homework. Bottom line is, I wanted a way to see what every sorority was like. I am living proof that PNMs really are ALWAYS watching. Tumblr gives an avenue to provide what I was so desperately searching for when I was preparing for recruitment.
Unfortunately with every positive, there are usually negatives and the tumblr accounts are no different. Here's my beef with them: no matter how many blogs you look at, what matters about a sorority and a person, is what's on the inside. I know it may sound cheesy. I know I'm guilty of being proud of my sorority's tumblr page because it reflects how beautiful, fun, and interesting my sisters are, but as a PNM I was also guilty of coming in close minded on what sororities I could see myself in based off of photos and things I read. I urge those coming through recruitment not to do what I did.
PSA: No matter what the tumblrs look like, it's important to not get your heart set on a sorority based off of a facebook link leading you to fun pictures. Girls going through recruitment need to keep an open mind and know that they will end up where they are supposed to be. The tumblrs should be there to make you eager for a sisterhood and looking forward to bid day to discover which one you're in. They shouldn't be there to judge a sorority based off of looks or to provide a new way for sororities to engage in petty competition ('sorority wars' on tumblr should definitely not be a thing)
Enjoy the tumblrs, but with an open heart and mind.
