You know of them all too well. Whether you have rocked them freshman year or would never dare touch them, especially even wear them, you know of the classic cargo shorts. A popular item of clothing, that however has at times (especially from Greek Life) gotten negative reviews. But why? We will go into the history, style, and overall argument of the cargo shorts. 

Originally cargo "pants," they were first worn in 1938 by British Military Personnel. Yes, leave it to the British to come up with these bad boys. The pants were not brought into the U.S. until the mid 1940's during World War II. The large side pockets were originally only on paratroopers' uniforms, giving them room to hold radios and extra ammunition. Besides the military, the pants went throughout the decades quietly. It wasn't until the mid 1990's when a revival happened and people were seen wearing the baggy pants, but this time as shorts. 

Now a days, when you see someone rocking these type of shorts, they tend to get many looks of disgust as well as laughs...especially in the Greek culture. Basically, if you equip yourself with a pair of these, you can get labeled as an "Independent" faster than an insane Usain Bolt on Red Bull.  The question is, "Why?" For one, you don't need that many pockets. Unless you are trying to sneak Twizzlers into a movie theater, I think you'll be fine without them. You have backpacks people, use them! 

In regards to fashion, it comes down to how bulky they are. In today's world, it seems like the thinner the better. And with cargo shorts...well, they can do the opposite. The pointless pockets put an extra baggy look to the pants, which seem to draw away many people.

Despite the criticism from many, people can still be seen wearing these shorts. It will probably continue to be that way until something much more ridiculous takes its place, perhaps extra short Chubbies? Yoga pants for guys? Who knows. 

Until then: if you have a pair, and if you have a "pair," take my advice and burn those suckers.
