As you all may know by now, Arizona State pulled a nice little prank on Arizona and The Daily Wildcatback in October, and just released a video last week showing how it went down, and a link to a saved version the original Wildcat article (which apparently has been taken down). I’ve heard various reactions from different people. Some found it to be hilarious, others were pissed and others asked how something like that even happened.

But this prank isn’t a big deal, and here are six reasons why.

1. It sort of didn’t affect the whole Arizona campus.

I’m well aware that the Wildcat is the Arizona student newspaper. But Arizona State’s Ben Kaufman and his three friends specifically used the Wildcat to pull off their prank. (Kaufman and his friends called the paper beforehand saying there would be a rally and if there could be an interview.) So this just wasn’t Kaufman and Co. making a fake rally and the Wildcatjust happened to hear about it and do their job by covering an event on campus. It is similar to when your friend trips and falls, and you laugh because it’s funny and it didn’t happen to you, but you still ask if they’re OK because you care about them. I’m not hating on the Wildcat; in fact, I used to work there, so I even felt a little embarrassed at first when I heard about this. They just happened to fall for a prank, but they got back up and admitted they fell for it.

2. The video that Kaufman and Co. released wasn’t that great.

There were numerous mistakes throughout the video, from proper names not being capitalized, using the wrong tense when describing something, words spelled wrong, to not even correctly counting how many Arizona students voted for “Proposition 200.” Kaufman told the Arizona Republic that all the errors were due to a lack of sleep. As a journalism major, I call BS on that one. I’m tired all the time, but that doesn’t mean I don’t double check to make sure everything is correct. Kaufman’s errors remind us why we aren’t fifth-year English majors (like him) at Arizona State. Or that we even go to Arizona State in the first place.

3. Kaufman’s prank failed as well as succeeded.

Simply put, there are Arizona students who thought the prank was funny. Myself included. And if you’re going to pull a prank, the only way it’s going to be successful if the pranked party is upset. And while there are plenty of Arizona students and fans who are upset and have been tweeting at Kaufman, the observations I’ve made is that there are a lot of people who thought this was funny. Pranks aren’t fun if the people you’re trying to prank think it’s funny too. (There’s a difference between being a good sport after being pranked and getting pranked and finding it funny.)

4. The joke’s on them Part 1.

The last time Arizona State tried to pull a joke on anyone? September 18 at the Arizona State-New Mexico football game. Their mascot jumped on the back of Tempe Councilman David Schapira, who was recently recovering from back surgery, and ending up re-injuring Schapira. Arizona State now has to pay Schapira $120,000 for Sparky’s “prank.” While the council member is also in the Tempe area, I don’t believe that people should be hurt during pranks, no matter who it is or what school they go to.

5. The joke’s on them Part 2.

Kaufman and Co. told Campus Rush how painful it was to have to drive down to wonderful and amazing Tucson and stand on campus for a few hours. The fact that a group of Sun Devils had to suffer and be on our gorgeous Arizona campus for a few hours is 100 percent satisfying. Because let’s be real, going up to stand on Arizona State’s campus is not worth my time nor would I ever let myself stoop to that level. (I did, unfortunately, have to spend my Saturday at their stadium covering the game and watching them take the territorial cup from Arizona. But if I have learned anything from seeing how children’s soccer/t-ball works, sometimes you just have to give the losers the trophy too so they think they are special also.)

6. History says it’s the land Arizona State is on that the United States actually took from Mexico.

Part of the Arizona State prank was telling Arizona students that the United States “stole” the Tucson area from Mexico. Now for a little history. The land the United States bought from Mexico is everything below present-day Phoenix. Just a few years before that, the United States took (stole) the Phoenix area and everything above it from Mexico during the Mexican-American War. In other words, the United States actually stole Arizona State from Mexico. Excuse me while I fill out the address on an envelope to send Arizona State back to Mexico.

So there. Six lovely reasons why the Arizona State prank doesn’t add up to much besides a good laugh. Obviously this may not be enough to patch up the wound of Arizona State winning the territorial cup this past weekend, but within a month all of this will be old news and be irrelevant.
